Documentation / The modules
Quiz
The Quiz module shows a series of multiple-choice questions, then an explained result. It comes in two formats: the graded quiz, where every question has a right answer, and the personality test, where every answer leads to a profile.
Creating a quiz
- Add the Quiz module to your site, then click "Create my quiz" in its row of the table.
- Give the quiz a name and choose its format: "Graded quiz" or "Personality test".
- Add the questions in the editor, then the tiers or the profiles, and click "Save".
The format cannot be changed after creation: it decides what every answer means. To change format, create another quiz.
A site can hold up to twenty quizzes. The code in each one's "Embed" tab shows that quiz, and no other.
The questions
A quiz holds up to 30 questions. Every question has a text (300 characters at most) and 2 to 8 answers. A question with fewer than two filled-in answers is removed on save.
Between two questions, you can insert a text block: some context, an excerpt to comment on.
In a graded quiz
| Kind of question | How it is graded |
|---|---|
| One right answer | Correct if the person chose the right answer. |
| Several right answers | All or nothing: correct only if the checked answers are exactly the right ones. Checking everything earns nothing. |
| True or false | Two fixed answers, "True" and "False". |
Every question is worth 1 to 10 points (1 by default). The score is the sum of the points earned, and the percentage is computed on the total points. An optional explanation (400 characters at most) can go with every question: it shows in the answer key.
In a personality test
All questions are single-answer. Every answer is tied to a profile. At the end, the profile chosen most often wins. In a tie, the first profile on your list wins.
Tiers and profiles
- Tiers (graded quiz): up to 6. Each has a minimum percentage, a title and a text. The person gets the last tier whose minimum they reached. For example, with tiers at 0%, 50% and 80%, a score of 65% gives the 50% tier.
- Profiles (personality test): up to 8. Each has a title and a text. Renaming a profile does not lose the results already stored for it.
The quiz's settings
- One question per screen, with a progress bar. A text block shows on the screen of the question that follows it.
- Shuffle the order of answers on every display. "True or false" questions are not shuffled. Shuffling only affects display, never grading.
- Show the answer key, question by question, at the end (graded quiz only): the answer given, the right answer and the explanation.
- The button text is changed on the sheet. By default: "See my result".
What the person sees
Grading happens on our server: the right answers are never sent to the browser before the end. After submitting, the frame shows:
- in a graded quiz, the score (for example "7 / 10, or 70%") with a gauge, then the title and text of the tier reached, then the answer key if it is enabled;
- in a personality test, the title and text of the profile obtained.
A "Start over" link goes back to the beginning of the quiz.
Asking for the email address before the result
By default, a quiz asks nothing of the person. In the quiz's settings, the "Email address" section offers three choices:
| Choice | What the person sees |
|---|---|
| Do not ask for it | The result, as soon as their answers are sent. This is the default. |
| Ask for it, with a "Skip" button | A screen asking for their address. They can leave it, or click "Skip" and see their result anyway. |
| Require it before the result | The same screen, without a "Skip" button: the result only shows once a valid address has been sent. |
The address screen carries three texts you can change:
- The sentence above the field (200 characters at most). By default: "Your result is ready."
- The field's name (80 characters at most). By default: "Your email address".
- The checkbox (200 characters at most). By default: "I agree to receive news from the author of this quiz." It always starts unchecked.
Under the box, a fixed line tells the person that their address is passed on to you, and to you alone. A text left empty goes back to its default.
The address is checked for its form (name@domain.com), not its existence: neither you nor we write to the person to confirm it. Bonjour la toile never sends anything to these addresses. If you write to them, do so only when the box was checked.
The result is only computed after the address screen: it is not in the page at any moment before, and a person who gives up on that screen leaves no entry. The address screen works without JavaScript, like the rest of the quiz.
The results
The quiz editor shows the number of questions, the number of entries submitted, and depending on the format the average score or the number of profiles reached. For a personality test, a "Who lands where" table gives the breakdown of entries by profile.
Every entry stores a score, a total, the profile obtained and the answers chosen. By default, no data says who answered: no name, no address, no IP address.
If you ask for the email address, the entry also keeps the address left and the state of the checkbox, and nothing more: no name, no IP address. An "Addresses left" table lists them in the "Results" tab, newest first, in pages of 50, with the date (Toronto time), the box checked or not, and the score or profile obtained. The "Export all to CSV" button downloads the whole list, with the same columns. A row's "Erase" button removes the address and the box from that entry, for example when the person asks you to forget them; their score stays counted.
In the CSV file, a cell that starts with =, +, - or @ is preceded by an apostrophe, so that a spreadsheet does not take it for a formula.
Deleting a quiz
Through the "More" menu, at the top of the quiz's screen. Deletion is final, and the submitted entries go with it, email addresses included. To hide a quiz without losing anything, choose "Take offline", in the same menu.
