Documentation / The modules

Reactions

The Reactions module puts a row of buttons under a page: emojis, a thumbs up or down, stars, a score. Your visitors react in one click, without writing or creating an account, and you see which pages people like.

The palette

A palette is the module's configuration: the sentence above the buttons, the type of reaction and the look of the row. One palette is enough in most cases; create a second one if you want another set of buttons elsewhere on the site: the code in its "Embed" tab shows that one. A site can hold up to twenty palettes.

A new palette offers three emojis (helpful, not sure, no) and counts votes separately for each page.

Reaction types

TypeThe buttonsThe vote
EmojisUp to eight signs of your choice.Reactions add up: a page can be "helpful" and "surprising".
Thumbs up, thumbs downYes or no.A rating: one vote per day. The summary gives the share of "yes".
Star ratingOne to five stars.A rating. The summary gives the average and the number of ratings.
Five facesFrom unhappy to delighted.A rating. The summary gives the average mood.
Score out of tenFrom 0 to 10.A rating. The summary gives the average.
A single buttonOne gesture of your choice: heart, bravo, thanks, excellent or helpful.A counter.

Changing type deletes nothing: the old numbers stay stored, and come back if you return to the previous type.

The signs of the "Emojis" type

Each sign is an emoji or a short symbol (six characters at most, no spaces), with a label. The label is not shown in the row, but screen readers read it and it appears on hover. Leave a line empty to skip it.

Three ready-made sets are offered. Choosing one replaces your signs on save. Numbers already counted stay, but the buttons of a removed sign stop showing.

Counting page by page, or for the whole site

The "Count separately for each page" box is checked by default: every address on your site has its own numbers. Unchecked, the whole site shares a single total. Changing this setting mixes nothing: the per-page numbers stay apart.

The page is recognized by its path, without whatever follows a ? or a #: /article?utm_source=x and /article count together. To group several addresses under one counter, give them the same data-page (it only has an effect if per-page counting is checked):

<div data-bl="reactions" data-cle="pk_yourkey" data-page="/my-group"></div>

The look of the row

Colors and font come from your style (see Styles). The palette's editor sets the shape of the row:

  • The drawing: color emojis, or line icons that take your style's accent color (no effect on your own emojis or on the score out of ten).
  • The shape of the buttons: pills, squares, or no outline.
  • Their size: small, normal or large.
  • Their position: left, center or right.
  • Next to each button: the numbers, the percentages, or nothing. Stars and the score out of ten never carry a number per button.
  • Show the summary (the average, the share of "yes") and show the total number of reactions, checked by default.

The editor's preview shows the saved palette, with your site's style. As long as the palette has received no vote, it shows sample numbers. Clicking in the preview counts nothing.

Voting rules

The module asks your visitors for no account. To keep a counter from being inflated by hand, the following limits apply, per IP address:

  • one click per sign, per page and per day;
  • six clicks per page and per day, all signs combined;
  • for the types that are ratings (thumbs, stars, faces, score out of ten), a single vote per page and per day.

Several people behind the same connection (an office, a school) therefore share these limits. A reaction counter gives a trend, not the result of a ballot.

Where to read the results

In the palette's "Numbers" tab, the "What people like, and where" table ranks your pages from most to least reactive: the total of each sign, the average for rated types, and the total. It shows the 25 most reactive pages. When counting is shared by the whole site, the row is called "whole site".

Deleting a palette

Through the "More" menu, at the top of the palette's screen. Deletion is final, and the counters go with it. To hide a palette without losing anything, choose "Take offline", in the same menu.
